Brief About Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences aims to achieve excellence and modernity in both teaching and research for the aim of improving community health care. The department includes three units: pharmaceutics and microbiology unit, pharmaceutical chemistry and biochemistry unit, and pharmacology and toxicology unit
It contributes to the teaching of compulsory specialization requirements and courses in pharmacology, pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmaceutics. It also participates in teaching the pharmacology and pharmaceutical chemistry parts in the integrated pharmacotherapy courses.
The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences has many faculty members from different disciplines with different ranks. It contributes effectively in teaching, research, community services, and extra-curricular activities
It includes a number of specialized labs that are essential for the educational journey including Organic chemistry lab, Analytical chemistry lab, Microbiology and Pharmaceutics. The department provides high quality education in different biomedical and pharmaceutical courses.

Biomedical courses include:
Anatomy & histology, physiology, pathophysiology, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, and immunology.

Medicinal Chemistry:
The students gain basic knowledge and laboratory skills in organic, analytical, and medicinal chemistry. Concepts of drug development, structure activity relationship of pharmaceutical compounds, drug receptor interaction and different drug design approach are taught. The applications of medicinal chemistry of drug classes acting on different body systems are taught in “integrated pharmacotherapy courses”. This integration includes medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, and therapeutics of each body system separately.

Pharmaceutics:
The students are educated and trained in courses focusing on pharmaceutical dosage forms & stability, industrial pharmacy, pharmaceutical calculations, compounding & IV admixture service, and cosmetics preparations. Types and manufacturing of different dosage forms that aim to improve drug delivery, stability, pharmacokinetics, and drug tolerability are covered.

Pharmacology & toxicology:
The students acquire basic knowledge of pharmacology including pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, as well as mechanisms of action of medications. The students also aquire basic laboratory skills through virtual pharmacology experiments in a simulated dry laboratory. The clinical applications of pharmacology of all drug classes are taught in “integrated pharmacotherapy courses”. In toxicology, general principles, mechanisms and management of toxicity of environmental pollutants and toxic substances are taught.
The department also teaches pharmacology courses for the other health colleges programs at the university.
